About us
Insurance explained with real numbers
SmartCoverage is an independent publisher of guides and free calculators about car, life, home and health insurance in the United States.
Why we exist
Most people buy insurance a few times in their life, under time pressure, from someone who is paid to sell it. The documents are long, the prices are opaque, and the questions that matter most, such as how much coverage you really need or whether a cheaper policy will pay when you claim, are rarely answered in plain language.
SmartCoverage was created to answer those questions. We read the rate studies, regulator reports, federal rules and policy wording, and turn them into guides that start with the answer and explain the trade-offs. Wherever a number depends on your own situation, we build a calculator so you can run it yourself.
What we cover
We also publish reviews and comparisons of insurers and insurance comparison sites, using the same published data. You can find every calculator on our Tools page.
How we research
Every guide is built from sources you can check: insurance regulators and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, federal agencies such as CMS, the IRS and HHS, independent research organizations such as KFF, customer satisfaction studies, and published price analyses that explain their methodology. Each guide lists its sources with dates, and shows the date it was last reviewed.
When sources disagree, we say so and explain why. When a figure is an estimate or a simplified model, the guide and the tool say that too. Our full standards are on our How We Research page.
Who writes our content
Our guides are written and reviewed by the SmartCoverage Editorial Team, which focuses on personal finance and insurance research. Every guide is checked against its sources before publication and reviewed again when prices, limits or rules change, such as new subsidy percentages, contribution limits or state rate data.
We are not licensed insurance agents or brokers, and we do not give individual advice. For decisions about your own coverage, we recommend speaking to a licensed agent, your state insurance department or, for health and Medicare questions, your State Health Insurance Assistance Program, which is free.
How we make money
SmartCoverage is free to read. We earn money from display advertising, served by Google AdSense. Advertisers do not choose our topics, see our content before publication or influence our conclusions, and an ad appearing next to a guide is not an endorsement.
We do not sell insurance, we do not sell or share the details you type into our calculators, and we do not ask for your phone number. If we ever add affiliate links, we will label them clearly on the page, and they will not change how we rank or describe any company.
Corrections
Insurance rules and prices change constantly, and we would rather be corrected than be out of date. If you spot an error, an outdated figure or a broken link, please email us at contact@coveragesmartt.com with the page address. We review every report, correct confirmed errors promptly and update the review date on the page.
