Lemonade is one of the cheapest and easiest insurers to buy from, and one of the most complained about relative to its size. Both statements are true, and which one matters more to you decides whether it is a good choice. For an inexpensive renters policy you manage on your phone, it is hard to beat. For a home you cannot afford to have a claim go wrong on, we would look harder.

Price
On renters insurance, Lemonade is consistently near the bottom of price comparisons. NerdWallet’s September 2026 data put its average at $125 a year, about $10 a month, against a national average of $165 for the same coverage: $30,000 of belongings, $100,000 of liability and a $500 deductible. That made it the cheapest of the large renters insurers in that analysis. Belongings are covered at replacement cost by default, which some cheaper policies do not include.
Homeowners prices are harder to judge, because Lemonade is not included in most large price studies and sells in fewer states. Car insurance pricing depends heavily on how you drive, since the app tracks your mileage and driving behavior; in a few states it charges a base rate plus a per-mile rate. Discounts are limited: bundling, paying annually and protective devices such as alarms.
Buying and managing a policy
This is what Lemonade was built for. A renters quote takes a few minutes in the app, with no agent and no phone call, and you can change coverage, add valuables or download proof of insurance at any time. If you want a landlord added as an interested party, it is a few taps. For people who never want to speak to an insurance company, it is the best experience in the market.
The flip side is that there is no local agent. Support is by chat, email and phone. If you like someone to review your coverage with you once a year, or you have an unusual home, that model fits less well.
Claims
You file a claim in the app by recording a short video explaining what happened and uploading photos or receipts. Lemonade says about 40% of claims are settled instantly by its automated system, with money sent straight to your bank account, and its mid-2026 shareholder letter reported its highest instant-claim rates in renters and pet insurance. For a stolen bike or a broken laptop, that speed is a real advantage.
Larger or more complicated claims go to human adjusters, and this is where the experience appears to vary more. Automated systems are fast when they say yes; when a claim is denied or disputed, the process can feel less personal than with an agent who knows you.
Complaints and satisfaction
This is Lemonade’s weak point. NerdWallet’s analysis of three years of complaint data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners rated Lemonade’s complaints as far more than expected for its size, across renters, homeowners and car insurance. In J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Home Insurance Study, Lemonade’s renters insurance scored slightly below average for satisfaction.
Complaint data has limits. A fast-growing company can draw more complaints simply from new customers learning how a policy works, and an index counts complaints without judging whether they were justified. But the pattern is consistent across products and years, and it should weigh more heavily the more you have to lose. You can check the latest figures yourself in the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search.
Coverage by product
Renters
Solid and flexible for the price. Optional add-ons, depending on the state, include extra coverage for valuables with no deductible, water backup, equipment breakdown and tenant water or pet damage. Belongings in a storage unit are covered up to $1,000 in most states. Some dog breeds are restricted in certain states, and flood, earthquake and pests are excluded, as with almost every renters policy. Our renters insurance comparison shows how it stacks up against State Farm and others.
Homeowners
Standard coverage for the house, other structures, belongings, liability and living expenses, with add-ons such as water backup, equipment breakdown and extended reconstruction cost in some states. NerdWallet rated the coverage options above average but the discounts very limited. It is not designed for high-value or unusual homes; see our guides to the best homeowners insurers and high-value home insurance for alternatives.
Car
Usage-based, with your phone monitoring driving at all times. It can suit low-mileage, careful drivers, and some states offer discounts for electric and hybrid cars; Lemonade also offers lower per-mile rates to some Tesla owners using Full Self-Driving. It is a poor fit if you drive long distances or do not want to be tracked. Compare it with the best car insurance companies before switching.
Pet and life
Lemonade’s pet insurance is a growing part of its business and is one of the products with the most instant claims. Its term life insurance, sold online, is simple to buy, but compare prices with established life insurers in our life insurance rankings.
The Giveback
Lemonade takes a fixed share of premiums as its fee, pays claims from the rest and, in years when money is left over, donates it to charities its customers choose. NerdWallet reports donations of more than $2 million in 2025. It is a genuine feature, but a small one in dollar terms per customer, and it should not be the reason you choose a policy.

Our verdict
For renters, especially those who want a cheap policy with replacement cost coverage and no paperwork, Lemonade is one of the best options available, and the complaint record matters less when a worst-case claim is a few thousand dollars of belongings. For homeowners, where a single claim can decide whether you can rebuild, we would get a Lemonade quote but give serious weight to insurers with better service records. For car insurance, it suits a narrow group of low-mileage drivers who are comfortable being tracked.
