Best Life Insurance Companies: Match One to What Matters to You

Last reviewed: October 2026 · By the SmartCoverage Editorial Team · How we research

The best life insurance company is the one that is financially strong, treats its customers well and sells the kind of policy you need at a fair price. In 2026, Nationwide, State Farm and Mutual of Omaha led J.D. Power’s customer satisfaction study; Northwestern Mutual, Guardian, New York Life and MassMutual hold AM Best’s top A++ rating for financial strength; and Pacific Life and Nationwide offer some of the highest no-exam limits.

No single company leads on everything, so start with what matters most to you.

Match a life insurer to what matters to you

Tap everything that matters to you. The three insurers that fit best rise to the top, with the reasons why.

Based on AM Best ratings and product details reported by Insurify (September 2026), the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study and Insurance.com’s 2026 customer survey. Features and no-exam limits depend on your age, health and state. A starting point for quotes, not a recommendation.

AM Best ratings and no-exam limits as reported by Insurify (September 2026). J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study, published October 2026; industry average 649. “Not in top 3” means the company’s score was not published in the release we used.

Satisfaction scores moved a lot from one year to the next. In J.D. Power’s 2025 study Mutual of Omaha was first (707), and 70% of insurers saw double-digit score changes. In 2026, the trust dimension fell 9 points across the industry, the steepest drop of any measure, and a single bad experience, such as struggling to reach a representative, cut trust scores by 96 points. In other words, service quality is real but not stable, which is why financial strength deserves at least as much weight.

Three questions that narrow the list

Term or permanent?
Term covers a set number of years for a low price; whole and universal life last for life and build cash value, at a much higher price.
Exam or no exam?
Skipping the medical exam is faster, but limits are lower and healthy people can pay more.
How much cover?
The right amount depends on income, debts and dependents, not on a round number.

Agent, advisor or online?

How you buy changes the experience. J.D. Power found customers who bought directly from the insurer were more satisfied in 2025, but in 2026 direct-to-consumer satisfaction fell 12 points to 684, while plans sold through agents and advisors rose 6 points to 645. The study also found most agent relationships go quiet after the sale: in 2025, 43% of customers had not heard from their agent in over three years.

A simple term policy is easy to compare and buy online. Whole or universal life, large policies and complicated health histories are where a good independent agent or advisor earns their fee, because they can shop several insurers and handle underwriting for you.

Check before you sign

  • Financial strength: look for an AM Best rating of A or better. The policy is a promise that may need to be paid decades from now.
  • Complaints: search the insurer in the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search to compare its complaints with its size.
  • Conversion option: for term life, check that you can convert to permanent coverage later without a new medical exam.
  • Riders: an accelerated death benefit, which pays part of the benefit if you are terminally ill, is often included at no cost. Waiver of premium for disability is worth pricing.
  • Same policy, several quotes: compare the same term length and amount from at least three insurers. Prices for the same person can differ widely.

Quick answers

Which life insurance company pays claims the most reliably?

No public ranking measures claim payment directly. Financial strength ratings (how able the insurer is to pay) and NAIC complaint data (how often customers complain to regulators) are the best available signals.

How much does life insurance cost?

Term life is cheaper than most people expect. In Insurance.com’s 2026 data, a $500,000, 20-year term policy averaged about $382 a year across the companies it surveyed, and the price rises quickly with age. See life insurance cost by age for typical prices at each age.

Is it better to buy life insurance through work?

Group life at work is cheap or free, but it usually covers only one or two times your salary and often ends when you leave the job. Most families need an individual policy on top.
